ECOWAS Destinations

Ports of entry, visa requirements and practical travel tips for the countries we drive to from Lagos.

Our regional trips run west along the coastal corridor — through Benin Republic and Togo, and on to Ghana. Here's what to know about each country before you set out.

This guide is general information for planning purposes. Entry requirements and border procedures can change — always confirm the current rules for your nationality before you travel.

Every Crossing

Cross-Border Essentials

Travel documents

A valid passport or ECOWAS travel certificate for every passenger. Children travelling need their own documents.

Vaccination card

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is routinely requested at West African land borders.

Vehicle papers

Cross-border vehicles travel with their own documentation, including the ECOWAS Brown Card motor insurance scheme used across the region. We handle this on our side.

Local currency

Benin and Togo use the CFA franc; Ghana uses the cedi. Carry some cash for each leg of the journey.

Benin Republic

Capital:
Porto-Novo
Main city:
Cotonou
Language:
French (official)

West African CFA franc (XOF)

Nigeria's closest neighbour on the western corridor and the first crossing on any road trip towards Togo or Ghana. Cotonou is the commercial hub; Porto-Novo is the official capital.

Ports & Entry Points

Visa Requirements

  • Citizens of ECOWAS member states may enter without a visa under the ECOWAS free-movement protocol, normally for stays of up to 90 days.
  • Carry a valid passport or ECOWAS travel certificate — an expired document will be turned back at the border.
  • Non-ECOWAS passport holders generally need a visa arranged in advance.
  • Immigration may ask about your purpose of travel, where you are staying and how long you intend to stay.

Travel Tips

  • Bring a valid yellow fever vaccination card — it is routinely requested at West African borders.
  • French is the working language; a few basic phrases go a long way at checkpoints and markets.
  • Change some naira into CFA francs before you cross; card acceptance outside Cotonou is limited.
  • Allow extra time at Seme, especially at weekends and around public holidays.
